CCIA Statement Ahead of Senate Commerce Committee Markup of Kids Off Social Media Act

Washington – The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation plans to mark up S. 278, the Kids Off Social Media Act Wednesday. KOSMA would force covered companies to search for and remove existing users under the age of 13 while preventing those under 13 from creating an account, as well as ban the use of any so-called “personalized recommendation systems” for users under the age of 17.

The following can be attributed to CCIA President & CEO Matt Schruers:

“If the goal is to ensure younger users see content more appropriate for their age, the language in this bill creates significant additional risks that go against these broadly shared goals. The better solution would be to work with responsible companies, which empower parents by providing tools to tailor online experiences for their children.”
