Washington – The Computer & Communications Industry Association expressed disappointment that the United States and Canada were unable to reach an agreement before the deadline, resulting in new 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods.
Outstanding digital trade barriers pose a serious impediment to the broader bilateral relationship and remain to be addressed. CCIA has long opposed Canada’s Online Streaming Act (C-11), which imposes discriminatory obligations on U.S. streaming services, and the Online News Act (C-18), which compels U.S. platforms to fund Canadian news businesses. CCIA continues to urge Canada to repeal both measures and uphold its USMCA digital trade commitments.
The following can be attributed to CCIA Vice President of Digital Trade Jonathan McHale:
“We are disappointed that the United States and Canada were unable to reach an agreement before the deadline. Additional tariffs risk imposing significant costs on businesses and consumers on both sides of the border, underscoring the need for both governments to return to the negotiating table.”
