On 27 January 2025, the Computer & Communications Association (CCIA Europe) hosted the ‘2030 Digital Targets and the Digital Networks Act: What is the Best Way Forward?’ high-level roundtable in Brussels.
Moderated by Ilsa Godlovitch (WIK-Consult), the timely discussion brought together senior representatives from the European Commission, the Polish EU Presidency, various Member States, telecom regulators, consumer organisations, NGOs, cloud providers, content delivery networks (CDNs), providers of online content and digital services, satellite operators, fibre companies, as well as alternative and incumbent telecom operators.
The debate focused on how the Commission’s upcoming Digital Networks Act (DNA) can drive innovation without undermining Europe’s digital competitiveness. Participants warned against new regulatory burdens on cloud services and CDNs, which could hinder AI and cloud adoption – both key to achieving the EU’s 2030 Digital Decade targets.
Concerns were raised about extending telecom regulations to digital services, potentially threatening net neutrality. The discussion also highlighted the need for cost-effective connectivity solutions, going beyond the EU’s current focus on 5G and fibre technology.
As the Commission prepares to unveil the DNA later this year, the roundtable underscored the importance of EU policies that foster innovation, optimise funding for connectivity, and protect the open internet.
