CCIA Statement Responding To Utah Governor Signing Amendments to App Store Statute

Washington – Utah’s governor has signed new legislation amending the state’s existing laws on age verification for app stores (HB 498). This comes a year after Utah passed its App Store Accountability Act,  just weeks after the Computer & Communications Industry Association sued the state of Utah in federal court to block the law as a violation of the First Amendment.

The following can be attributed to CCIA President & CEO Matt Schruers:

“The governor has signed Utah’s App Store Accountability Act Amendments, which the legislature expressly enacted in response to constitutional claims made by CCIA against the original App Store Accountability Act. We welcome recognition of the unconstitutional nature of this statute. But because aspects of the amended statute still present First Amendment concerns, we will continue to challenge efforts to enforce this unconstitutional law. “
