CCIA Submits Comments to NIST Regarding Privacy and Security of AI Agents

Washington – The Computer & Communications Industry Association has submitted comments in response to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)’s request for information on security considerations for artificial intelligence (AI) agents.

CCIA’s comments focus on the need for federal policy to reflect an approach consistent with emerging NIST frameworks, and emphasize the need for the federal government to allow flexibility for different safety approaches through a multistakeholder approach with industry.

CCIA members are at the forefront of development and deployment in technological fields such as AI and machine learning, including the introduction of AI agents. For decades, CCIA has supported innovation policy for emerging technology that reflects a deliberate, risk-based approach.

The following can be attributed to CCIA Information Policy Manager, Tricia McCleary:

“An overly prescriptive or blanket regulatory approach risks hindering innovation and undermining the development of beneficial AI applications that Americans rely on. While AI agents may introduce new cybersecurity considerations that warrant careful attention, these risks are best addressed through flexible frameworks that evolve alongside technology. A regulatory environment that supports continued innovation is essential to maintaining U.S. leadership in AI development.”
