CCIA Statement As FTC Begins Its Case Against Amazon Prime

Washington – The Federal Trade Commission begins the trial phase of its case against Amazon Prime’s subscription services this week. The FTC is expected to argue that Amazon used so-called “dark patterns” to trick consumers into signing up for its Prime subscription, and made it overly difficult for them to cancel. The FTC also took the unusual step of expanding the case by naming three Amazon executives in their personal capacity.

The Computer & Communications Industry Association has advocated for competition in the tech industry for over 50 years.

The following can be attributed to CCIA President Matt Schruers:

“The FTC takes issue with common design elements employed by businesses to enhance the overall consumer experience. The agency’s case lacks legal grounds and, if successful, could have serious consequences for the retail market and the economy as a whole, potentially harming consumers and businesses alike.“
