Washington –The Computer & Communications Industry Association has responded to the Colorado Office of the Attorney General’s request for input on the Colorado Privacy Act rules governing children’s online data. In its submission, CCIA emphasizes the importance of protecting children online while preserving freedom of expression and avoiding unintended consequences.
CCIA said in its comments that system design feature regulations must be written carefully to avoid prohibiting Colorado minors from being able to scroll to the next chapter in the online edition of a book, or online services from suggesting additional books or videos on a historical topic a minor might be researching.
The following can be attributed to Aodhan Downey, West Regional State Policy Manager at CCIA:
“We share the goals of protecting children online and are incentivized to do so. At a time when online services and states are aiming to minimize data collection, regulatory frameworks should avoid one-size-fits-all mandates that could unintentionally undermine minors’ privacy. CCIA appreciates the opportunity to provide input and looks forward to working with regulators.”
