CCIA Raises Concern Over the Nevada Youth Online Safety Act

WashingtonThe Computer & Communications Industry Association supports policies across the nation that protect users online while preserving individual freedoms, upholding Constitutional rights, and avoiding legal overreach. The Association is raising concerns about Nevada’s  SB 63 – “Nevada Youth Online Safety Act”, a bill that would collect various sensitive types of data, including biometrics, in order to verify the age of the user.

The following statement can be attributed to Aodhan Downey, State Policy Manager for CCIA:

“Federal courts have consistently struck down similar laws requiring age verification and parental consent, finding they violate the First Amendment. Legislators should work with businesses to continue their ongoing private efforts to implement mechanisms such as daily time limits or child-safe searching so that parents can have control over their own child’s social media use.”
