CCIA Responds to UK’s Online Safety Act Enforcement

London – The UK officially brought its Online Safety Act into force on Monday, December 16th.  Ofcom, the UK’s media and telecommunications regulator, has published its first-ever codes of practice and guidance for companies regulated under the new framework. These guidelines outline the actions firms must take to address illegal activities on their platforms.

The Computer & Communications Industry Association issued the following response, attributable to Matthew Sinclair, Senior Director, CCIA UK:

“The companies listed in this document make extensive efforts to identify and remove fraudulent content when notified and enforce their terms of service and the law against bad actors. Successfully combating fraud requires companies to work together, particularly when the unlawful conduct occurs offline, or outside the platform or service where fraudsters first make contact with their victims. The PSR is right to focus on practical cooperation to mitigate harm to consumers and needs to be careful to avoid any sense that it has been enlisted in a lobbying effort by the firms it is charged with regulating.”
