CCIA Members Support Customer Safety Across Europe

Brussels, BELGIUM — The world’s leading e-commerce companies today signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Online Product Safety in a process facilitated by Vĕra Jourová, the European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality. CCIA members signing today’s agreement include Amazon, eBay and Rakuten-France.

The memo builds on the existing safeguards already introduced by these companies and reiterates their support for customer safety and commitment to have effective processes to proactively remove dangerous items from sale once notified.

We commend the European Commission for its successful collaboration with industry to identify the exact needs and the most effective intervention.  We hope this initiative will inspire any future EU initiatives, notably on the removal of online content and responsibilities online. Such possible measures should also be developed in close partnership with industry and be tailored narrowly to take account of the diversity of different online sectors.
