CCIA Reaction to Online Safety Bills Markup

Washington – The House Energy and Commerce Committee has advanced several bills aimed at promoting online safety for young people. While protecting younger users online is a critical and shared objective, proposals to regulate digital services must be carefully designed to avoid unintended consequences that could undermine privacy, security, innovation, and access to lawful information online.

The Computer & Communications Industry Association supports federal privacy legislation to provide additional privacy protections for internet users of all ages and across all states.

The following can be attributed to CCIA Vice President for Federal Affairs, Brian McMillan:

“CCIA shares the goal of protecting young people online and supports initiatives to strengthen industry practices for online safety. Unfortunately, several bills advanced out of the Energy & Commerce Committee risk unintended consequences for privacy, security, and free expression. We look forward to continuing this work with congressional leaders.”
