CCIA Responds to CMA’s Mobile Ecosystems Announcements

London –  UK competition regulators have announced a proposed decision on the designation of Apple and Google’s mobile ecosystems under its new Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act regime, which – if confirmed – would see both subject to new ex ante regulation. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) also set out a roadmap to consider conduct requirements including regulation of how apps are ranked and presented, how users choose software and interoperability with third party features.

The following can be attributed to CCIA Senior Director and head of CCIA’s London office Matthew Sinclair:

“Millions of British consumers expect their phones to provide an easy, private and secure experience. Users can choose between mobile ecosystems that take different approaches to meeting their diverse needs. The CMA needs to avoid overly prescriptive interventions that could restrict that consumer choice, endanger the integration of services like AI and undermine the growth and investment that comes with being an early market for new features.”
