CCIA Files Comments on AI for OSTP, NSF

Washington – In response to a request for information on artificial intelligence from the National Science Foundation on behalf of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, the Computer & Communications Industry Association filed comments on Saturday. CCIA said how the federal government handles AI policy will be crucial to maintaining the U.S.’s leading position in AI technology. CCIA’s comments recommended a number of priorities:

  • Ensuring access to sufficient AI infrastructure.
  • Adopting balanced export control and trade policies that ensure national security without overly restricting access to foreign markets.
  • Creating a unified national approach to AI policy.
  • Ensuring data access, including by strongly supporting fair use in the U.S. and similar text and data mining exceptions around the world.
  • Protecting the privacy of Americans without stifling AI development.
  • Protecting open source AI development.
The following can be attributed to CCIA Senior Counsel for Innovation Policy Josh Landau:

“Many of the key innovations in artificial intelligence have stemmed from work done by CCIA members.  Without their contributions, modern AI technology would not exist. A regulatory environment that enables American companies like our members to continue to lead in this area of innovation is essential to maintaining leadership in artificial intelligence technology for the United States.”
