CCIA Welcomes Parallel NTIA and NIST Privacy Initiatives

Washington — The Commerce Department is asking stakeholders for input on privacy. NTIA published a request for comments in the Federal Register today on “ways to advance consumer privacy while protecting prosperity and innovation.” NTIA has proposed a set of privacy principles and outcomes for consumers and industry, along with high-level goals for future privacy action at the federal level. NTIA’s proposal runs in parallel to NIST’s recently announced privacy engineering risk management framework, which is envisioned as a voluntary tool for organizations to better identify, assess, manage, and communicate about privacy risks.

The Computer & Communications Industry Association has been a longtime advocate for thoughtful privacy safeguards. The following can be attributed to CCIA President & CEO Ed Black:

“CCIA welcomes the Department of Commerce’s engagement, through NTIA and NIST, with the ongoing conversation about privacy and data protection. Our companies are willing to engage in a real thoughtful discussion on privacy and are glad to see NTIA and NIST taking the lead to organize that in a way that includes input from all stakeholders.”
