European Commission Proposes Plan To Tackle Disinformation Online

Brussels, BELGIUM — The European Commission has released its Communication on “Tackling online disinformation,” aimed at improving information transparency, diversity and credibility through inclusive solutions. The Computer & Communications Industry Association welcomes the multi-stakeholder approach chosen by the Commission, which we believe appropriately addresses this complicated issue.

The Commission specifically wants to develop an EU-wide code of practice on disinformation by July, with a view to produce measurable  effects by October 2018.

The following statement can be attributed to CCIA Europe Senior Policy Manager Maud Sacquet:

“The tech industry takes the spread of disinformation online very seriously. We appreciate the multi-stakeholder approach chosen by the Commission, as it requires the involvement of the entire media ecosystem to address this complex problem.”

“When drafting the Code of Practice, it is important to recognise that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to address this issue given the diversity of affected services. We are concerned that the October implementation deadline appears rushed.”
