EC Releases Report On Privacy Shield Framework

Brussels, BELGIUM — Following the first annual review of the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield in Washington last month, the European Commission released its report today. The report examined the implementation and adequacy of the framework’s strengthened measures for data protection and redress, while also providing recommendations for additional clarity and robustness. The report says the U.S. has set up the necessary structures and procedures to ensure Privacy Shield is working satisfactorily.

The E.U.-U.S. Privacy Shield allows certified companies to make data transfers of personal data for commercial purposes from the EU to the U.S.

The Computer & Communications Industry Association has been a longtime advocate for stronger privacy safeguards for data transfers. The following can be attributed to CCIA’s Senior Policy Counsel Bijan Madhani:

“We agree with the European Commission’s assessment of the robustness of Privacy Shield, which has enhanced both privacy safeguards and provided legal clarity for certified companies and users.”

“We look forward to working with the Commission and the U.S. Department of Commerce to ensure the continued efficacy of Privacy Shield and to further improve its operation.”
