Washington — The FCC has released a Public Notice, inviting comments on a petition asking to facilitate the deployment of 5G networks and give cell phone users better, faster Internet access.
It’s no secret that people are constantly on their phones streaming videos, sending selfies, and checking social media. They need more bandwidth and the FCC should take this opportunity to address that demand.
The FCC, Congress, and the Administration are all pursuing options for spectrum allocation, facilitating deployments, and increasing network capacity. We believe the petition, which asks the FCC to updates its rules to promote two-way mobile broadband service in an underutilized band [12.2-12.7 GHz band] of spectrum, is a deserving approach well suited to fulfilling these goals.
The Computer & Communications Industry Association supports this petition and urges the FCC to update its rules and open up more lanes for 5G. The following can be attributed to CCIA President & CEO Ed Black:
“The FCC should update its rules and remove the current unnecessarily restrictive, technical and operational limitations. The FCC has an opportunity to facilitate the sharing of this spectrum — which would further promote flexibility and 5G deployment. This would free up more spectrum that would be ideal for 5G.
“A rules update could promote network densification in areas of high demand, and it would harmonize the FCC’s rules with how the band is utilized in other countries. This would be a win for mobile Internet access and the innovation that would follow.”
