Washington — The Computer & Communications Industry Association welcomes today’s bipartisan vote to pass the USA FREEDOM Act out of the House Judiciary Committee. The 25-2 margin demonstrates the efficacy and necessity of the reforms contained in the bill.

“Though it does not put an end to the full scope of the mass surveillance programs used by the NSA and would benefit from more robust oversight mechanisms, the USA FREEDOM Act is a good first step towards meaningful reform of the bulk surveillance authorities under the PATRIOT Act and FISA.
“We commend Chairman Goodlatte, Ranking Member Conyers, and Representatives Sensenbrenner and Nadler on their efforts to craft reform legislation with narrowed authorities and improved transparency measures in the face of strong opposition and a swiftly approaching deadline for Congressional action. We now urge House leadership and the Senate to quickly enact the necessary reforms contained in the USA FREEDOM Act, and stand ready to assist and improve the legislation as needed.”
