CCIA UK Responds to Framework for Competition and Markets Authority Ex Ante Powers

London – The Competition and Markets Authority has today announced how it intends to implement principles outlined for the CMA’s work generally by its Chief Executive earlier this year in the specific instance of the new ex ante framework for regulating digital markets created by the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act (DMCC).  The document offers guidance on how the regulator hopes to use the new digital markets competition regime “flexibly, proportionately and collaboratively.”

The following can be attributed to CCIA Senior Director and head of CCIA’s London office Matthew Sinclair:

“This announcement from the CMA is a welcome commitment to proportionality in its implementation of the new digital markets regime. It is quite right that the UK regulator should ensure its decisions are focused on the needs of UK consumers and avoid disrupting complex global digital ecosystems with premature or overly broad interventions. The proof will now be in the pudding. Hopefully, the CMA will reassure companies operating important digital services and investing in the UK with careful and proportionate use of its new powers in the announcements expected in the coming months.”
