CCIA UK responds to reports Apple is removing encryption tool for UK customers

London — Following earlier reports in the US media of the UK government demanding back-door access to encrypted user data, Apple is reportedly pulling a security tool known as Advanced Data Protection for UK users, according to news reports. The ADP tool allows users to store encrypted photos and data in the cloud with security that does not allow anyone else, including Apple, to have access.

The following can be attributed to CCIA Senior Director and head of CCIA’s London office Matthew Sinclair:

“Weakening encryption for the sensitive personal data that British consumers have on their phones is a worrying step backwards. Law enforcement authorities should be working with companies to help protect people’s privacy against growing global threats, not forcing them to scrap important security improvements. Ministers should step in urgently and ensure that the UK does not stand out as the weak link in international efforts to promote safety and security online.”
