Washington — The Commerce Department is taking comments through the end of the business day on curbing the availability of counterfeit products online, following a Presidential Memorandum issued in April. The Federal Register notice indicates recommendations may be made and stakeholders have the chance to comment on what should be considered.
The Computer & Communications Industry Association is an international trade association which has members that enforce policies aimed at reducing piracy and counterfeit products online. In its comments, CCIA identified a number of existing policies and tools in place by Internet services and asks the Administration to use this consultation as an opportunity to strengthen e-commerce.

“Consumer trust is essential to the provision of Internet and e-commerce services. To retain trust, online companies take the problem of counterfeits seriously and have built out substantial programs to respond to those attempting to sell counterfeit products on their site. As the Administration considers potential policy options to further combat this issue, we’d encourage officials to consider that smaller platforms may not have the same resources to respond in the same way as larger ones.”
