EU to Support Both Encryption And Decryption In New “Anti-Terrorism Package”

Brussels, BELGIUM —  The European Commission (EC) issued its “anti-terrorism package” today, which includes several EU actions to face “challenges posed by the use of encryption.”  Proposed EU actions include “technical support measures, a new toolbox of techniques, and training, and proposes setting up a network of points of expertise.” The EC will on the one hand “support law enforcement and judicial authorities when they encounter encryption … without weakening encryption at a more general level.”

The Computer & Communications Industry Association is a longtime supporter of strong encryption.

The following can be attributed to CCIA Europe Vice President Christian Borggreen:

“Encryption is fundamental to ensure overall societal security and privacy.  We trust the EU will remain mindful of the widespread support for encryption as expressed by European Commissioners, ENISA, data protection authorities, industry, and civil society.  We will continue to monitor how the European Commission will manage to support both encryption and decryption.”
