Geneva – A need for better efficiency in global standards has led five global organizations to launch an initiative supporting the modern paradigm for global open standards. With their initiative “Open-Stand.org,” groups including founders IEEE, Internet Architecture Board (IAB), Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), Internet Society and World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) have established a jointly developed set of principles to better support global open standards and offer guidelines.
They recommend cooperation among standards organizations, a commitment to interoperability, competition and innovation, availability of the standards to all and voluntary adoption. While the standards are being developed, they point out the need to adhere to due process, broad consensus, transparency, balance and openness.
The Computer & Communications Industry Association has supported open standards since organizing a meeting among leading tech innovators in the 1980s, and endorses this effort by well-respected global organizations to articulate the principles that support an open global framework for innovation. CCIA Geneva Representative Nick Ashton-Hart also leads the Internet Digital Economy Alliance (IDEA) endorsed the principles outlined by Open-Stand.org:
