CCIA and IDEA invite you to join us on Thursday, May 16 at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum in Geneva, where we will be hosting a workshop on the economic dimensions of Internet governance. The workshop, which will run from 10:00am-12:00pm EST (6:00pm-8:00pm Geneva), will be broadcast on the web and includes a remote participation option. The event details are as follows:
EVENT: The Elephant in the Room: Why the Economic Dimension Needs Higher Priority in Internet Governance Policy Debates
Internet governance discussions rarely look at the economic value of the networked economy, and what works to foster its growth and development, instead focusing on political aspects of governance. This session seeks to redress this balance, bringing together key governmental and non-governmental experts on trade and the networked economy, and industry and NGO representatives, looking at key questions like:
- How can global trade rules protect and defend the decentralized, multi-stakeholder-based Internet?
- How does the Internet as a trading platform depend upon decentralized decision-making?
- Is the development dimension – the capacity of the Internet to create economic opportunity – properly reflected in Internet governance debates, and if not, what can be done about it?
