As the Obama administration considers its next Supreme Court nominee many groups discuss what diversity on the court means and why it is needed. In a letter to President Obama Wednesday, the Computer & Communications Industry Association pointed out the need for diversity in career backgrounds on the high court.
CCIA said the court is likely to face issues ranging from privacy to free speech and antitrust to intellectual property in the next five years so having someone on the court who understands the technology behind these issues could help ask probative questions during hearings.
“As technology rapidly changes, someone who understands the tech economy and how technology works would be very valuable in determining how to uphold the intentions of our founding fathers while embracing the innovation of our sons and daughters,” said CCIA President & CEO Ed Black in the letter.
Black concluded by offering one name — Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., whom he said has a keen understanding of the law, technology and the innovation economy.
