Link Taxes

As mandatory payments for online news content—often referred to as “link taxes”—continue to be seen at the global, state, and federal levels, so do the negative and comprehensive consequences of the movement on the internet’s users, journalists themselves, and local publications.

CCIA’s View:

Link taxes threaten the most essential facets of information sharing and free expression on the internet, especially at a time when community-centered and well-researched journalism is critical. These ongoing policy efforts drastically reduce traffic to news websites, harm the information ecosystem, and ultimately prioritize wealth distribution to hedge funds and the largest media and broadcasting conglomerates. Efforts against these types of initiatives aim to protect both journalism and the internet from the unintended consequences of these link taxes, ensuring that the free flow of information remains a crucial part of the digital world.
