CCIA Supports Encrypt Act

Washington — Representatives Ted Lieu, D-Calif., Mike Bishop, R-Mich, Suzan DelBene, D-Wa., and Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, have reintroduced the ENCRYPT Act. The bill would prevent states from mandating or requesting weakened encryption, backdoors, or decryption from manufacturers and providers of consumer Internet devices and services.

The Computer & Communications Industry Association, which represents device makers, internet services and telecommunication companies, has supported strong encryption for decades. The following can be attributed to CCIA President & CEO Ed Black:

“CCIA thanks Representatives Lieu, Bishop, DelBene and Jordan for their leadership in protecting privacy and strengthening cybersecurity. A state-by-state patchwork of varying mandates is anathema to the quintessentially borderless nature of the Internet. Any requirements for backdoors or otherwise weakened encryption in secure digital services and devices are infeasible solutions in search of a problem, and would do more harm than good to economic and national security.”
