CCIA Files ITC Comments Asking It Not To Ban iPhones In Response To Qualcomm Patent Dispute

Washington — As Qualcomm pressures the International Trade Commission to block some iPhones over a questionable patent dispute, the Computer & Communications Industry Association filed comments today saying Administrative Law Judge Pender was right that such action is not in the public interest. CCIA said that if the ITC issued an order barring the import of phones with Intel chips, it would harm competition and national security.

CCIA is an international not for profit tech trade association, whose members do not include Qualcomm or Apple. The following can be attributed to CCIA President & CEO Ed Black:

“Given what is at stake for consumers, US leadership in 5G, competition and national security, the ITC should not issue the ban Qualcomm is requesting.

“The PTO is investigating the patents behind this particular claim by Qualcomm. The FTC is already challenging Qualcomm’s anticompetitive practices around some of its patents in court in another separate case. It would make no sense for another government agency to support different anticompetitive practices using different patents with an import ban.”
